„ANO von Dahom“ (one from home)

ANO is a film performance and research project on the culture of the Danube Swabians (German speaking settlements along the lower regions of the Danube). The project will take place in an open/informal and participative frame. The project is a performative and documentary engagement with the social fabric, history and folk culture of the Danube Swabians, in the form of interviews, dance evenings and performances that constitute a contemporary artistic engagement with the traditional forms of movement. At the same time it is an investigation into the family history and identity of the artist who herself descends from refugees who fled the Banat region. The aim is to incorporate the local population and to open a possible reading of the traditional culture. Traditional forms of movement will be passed on, learned and understood due to the creation of a space of learning and exchange with witnesses of the displacement after WWII. It is at least as important to create an understanding of the social texture and the historical conditions that this culture was embedded in and to reflect it in relation to contemporary society. The dance evenings functioned as a place of exchange and were central to the social fabric. In this project they become a place of possible minoritarian narratives. Concomitantly the witnesses of the displacement will be interviewed and filmed. After the forced displacement during and after WWII, during which the Danube Swabians played a dark role in the holocaust of the Jewish people, the German speaking inhabitants of the Banat regions found themselves as foreigners in refugee camps in Germany and Austria. Places of historical importance will be researched and will in part be places where the project will be realised. ANO is a critical and current engagement with the conflictive history of the „returned“ Danube Swabians.

Die Performerin und Choreografin Silke Grabinger zeigt gemeinsam mit dem Tänzer Gergely Dudas in einer abendfüllenden Performance, auf welche Art und Weise sich die Geschichte ihrer Vorfahrinnen in ihren Körper eingeschrieben hat und wie die überlieferten Erzählungen ihrer Großmutter und Großtante in ihr nachklingen. In ihren Suchbewegungen setzt sie sich gemeinsam mit Gergely Dudas nicht nur mit dem sozialen Gewebe, der Geschichte und den alltäglichen Gewohnheiten der Donauschwabinnen auseinander, sondern versucht auch, das Verborgene, das Nicht-Gesagte, das in den Familien Verschwiegene zu thematisieren. Die Vorfahren von Silke Grabinger lebten als sogenannte Donauschwabinnen seit der Zeit Maria Theresias im Banat. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs waren sie unter anderem auch in NS-Verbrechen verstrickt. Noch vor Kriegsende wurden so gut wie fast alle Donauschwabinnen kollektiv vertrieben oder kamen in Internierungslager. Sie wurden aufgrund der AVNOJ-Beschlüsse Jugoslawiens enteignet. Als Fremde fanden sie sich nun in Flüchtlingslagern in Österreich und Deutschland wieder. Einige wanderten nach Übersee aus, andere suchten in Österreich eine neue Heimat. Rund um Linz gibt es Ortschaften, die bei genauerem Hinsehen einen Teil ihres Wachstums nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auch den Flüchtlingen aus dem donauschwäbischen Raum verdanken.

Wenn nun die Geschichte weiterwirkt, und das ist unter Wissenschaftler*innen unbestritten, so stellt sich die Frage, wie die Geschichte der Vorfahren als Täter- und Opfergeschichte in den Familien weitergegeben wurde. Was wurde ausgespart und worüber wurde gesprochen? Und wie wirkt das Verschwiegene und wie das Erzählte auf die zweite und dritte Generation? Und wie sehr ist das eigene Verhalten, Denken und Fühlen Teil der Geschichte der Vorfahren? Silke Grabinger versucht in ihrem performativ-dokumentarischen Projekt zu zeigen, welche Spuren die Geschichten ihrer Vorfahren bei ihr hinterlassen haben. In diesem Sinne ist ihre Performance auch eine sehr individuelle Reise von der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart.

Dieses Projekt wird auf europäischer Ebene unter dem Titel „Someone from Home“ im Rahmen von Creative Europe – Culture Sub-programme (2014-2020) –”Support for European Cooperation Projects related to the European Year of cultural Heritage 2018″ mit den Ländern Serbien, Ungarn, Rumänien und Bulgarien umgesetzt.

“ANO”

“ANO” is the first part of the “Someone From Home” series and sees Silke Grabinger, together with Hungarian dancer Gergely Dudas, grapple with the social fabric, the history, and the culture of the Danube Swabians and trace their roots.

This performance and research project concerning the culture of the Danube Swabians is split into several parts and anchored in an open/informal and participative framework. The project was conceived in a performative-documentary style and addresses the history and popular culture of the Danube Swabians in the form of a performance. At the same time, Silke Grabinger, whose ancestors had to flee their home of the Banat after the Second World War, investigates her family history. The aim is to involve visitors in the entire project and to facilitate a new interpretation of the popular culture(s) concerned. However, it is also crucial that the social fabric and historical conditions in which this popular culture was embedded and how it is reflected in society today is understood. Dance performances were sites of exchange and therefore played an important role in communal life. In this project, the performances will become places where people engage with history and historical narratives, with a particular eye on minorities. During the Second World War, German-speaking inhabitants of the Banat were, to some extent, involved in the crimes of the Nazi regime. At the end of the war, the Danube Swabians were expelled en masse and, once again, became strangers in refugee camps in Austria and Germany. Locations of historical significance are artistically integrated into the piece. This project is to be implemented on a European level together with Serbia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. “ANO” is a critical and modern examination of the conflict-ridden history
of the Danube Swabians.

“ANO” ist der erste Teil der Serie „Ano von Dahom/Einer von Daheim“. Dabei setzt sich Silke Grabinger gemeinsam mit dem ungarischen Tänzer Gergely Dudas mit dem sozialen Gewebe, der Geschichte und der Kultur der Donauschwabinnen auseinander und spürt ihren Wurzeln nach.
Dieses mehrteilige Performance- und Forschungsprojekt zur Kultur der Donauschwabinnen ist in einen offenen/informellen und partizipativen Rahmen eingebettet. Das Projekt wurde performativ-dokumentarisch konzipiert und hat die Geschichte und die Volkskultur der Donauschwabinnen in Form einer Performance zum Inhalt. Der zweite Teil, der 2018 als zeitgenössischer, abendfüllender künstlerischer Tanzabend stattfinden wird, behandelt die traditionellen Bewegungsformen der Donauschwabinnen. Gleichzeitig untersucht Silke Grabinger, deren Vorfahrinnen aus ihrer Heimat, dem Banat, nach dem 2. Weltkrieg flüchten mussten, ihre familiäre Geschichte.Ziel ist es, im Gesamtprojekt die Besucherinnen einzubinden und eine neue Lesart der Volkskultur(en) zu ermöglichen.Relevant ist aber auch das Verständnis des sozialen Gewebes und der geschichtlichen Bedingungen, in denen diese Volkskultur eingebettet war und wie sie in der Gesellschaft heute reflektiert wird.Die Tanzabende waren Orte des Austausches und somit ein wichtiges Element des Zusammenlebens. In diesem Projekt werden sie zu einem Ort der Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte und den historischen Narrativen, Minoritäten betreffend.Die deutschsprachigen Banatbewohnerinnen waren während des 2. Weltkrieges zum Teil an Verbrechen des NS-Regimes beteiligt. Die Donauschwabinnen wurden kollektiv zu Kriegsende vertrieben und fanden sich als Fremde in Flüchtlingslagern in Österreich und Deutschland wieder. Orte von historischer Bedeutung werden künstlerisch integriert. Dieses Projekt wird auf europäischer Ebene gemeinsam mit den Ländern Serbien, Ungarn, Rumänien und Bulgarien umgesetzt. „ANO“ ist eine kritische und aktuelle Auseinandersetzung mit der konfliktreichen Geschichte der Donauschwabinnen.
